I appreciate your response! :) It has seemed to me throughout the show that Bates was often motivated by wanting to protect those around him, whether it was Anna or his employer. It is a realistic portrayal of people who take perhaps more responsibility for what goes on around them than they should, meaning that they care more about consequences than transparency. Your point is well taken, though. We can agree to disagree.
