Blasphemy! Mistah Bates is a Beatrix Potter character come to life.
The post at the link above is depressing. The writer assumes that Bates (from Downtown Abbey) is shady for not wanting Anna to be his mistress. Typical reactionary thinking (applied to television this time). If Anna lived as Bates’ mistress, rather than waiting for him to divorce and marry her, at that time in history she would have to continue to be a maid for the rest of her life. She would have no access to retirement or any other form of security. However, if she was actually able to marry, not only could she and Bates make a life on a farm somewhere, meaning they could have babies and such, but she would also have property as security if he died. So, Bates is actually doing a very good thing by enduring the disgrace of a divorce from a shady woman who is likely to make it hard on him, all FOR ANNA.
IT JUST DRIVES ME CRAZY WHEN PEOPLE REACT TO THE RELATIONSHIPS ON A PERIOD SHOW AS IF THEY WERE HAPPENING TO THEIR STUPID SHALLOW FRIENDS.

Read the linked article first. Ok, so Mr. Bates does sort of naively and ridiculously not tell Anna anything about...
